India's First Fully Automated Driverless Train Services on Magenta Line

India to begin operations on it's first-ever fully Automated Driverless Train Services on Magenta Line from 28th December. Mr Anuj Dayal, DMRC informed about the same on the occasion of 18 Years of Completion of Metro Services in Delhi.

"Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will be flagging off the country’s first-ever fully automated Driverless Train service on the 37 KM-Magenta Line (Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden) and will also be launching the fully operational National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for travel on the 23 KM Airport Express Line (New Delhi to Dwarka Sector 21) on 28th December 2020," DMRC said in its statement.

The services will be inaugurated by PM through video-conferencing.

Delhi Metro began its commercial operations on 25th December 2002. Today, it runs across 380+ kms across 285 Stations in Delhi-NCR. On the occasion of 18 Years of Service, going fully automated would be a great milestone for Rapid Transport Network. Driven by the latest technology, the DMRC has conducted various trials for Driverless trains.

The Pink and Magenta Line has been operating on Automatic Train Operations (ATO) and trials for Unattended Train Operations (UTO) were conducted during non-revenue hours. Post-inauguration on Monday, Magenta Line(Janakpuri West - Botanical Garden) will switch from ATO to UTO.

This will replace Drivers with 'Roaming Attendants' who will be trained in driving trains in case of emergencies and will move around the train to assist the passengers in need.

Changes have been made in General Rules for running trains and the new Metro Rail General Rules 2020 takes into account Driverless operations.

National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) also known as One Nation One Card will also become usable from Monday.
